They have beautiful flowers, emit a mild perfumed fragrance, and will bloom twice a year if healthy. What more can a person taking care of orchids ask for? Quality of light and quantity of fertilizer are the only conditions that you have to maintain.

If you are looking for a challenge in taking care orchids, try the Cattleya group. They are larger plants and need some kind of supplemental light to grow well in the home. Their blooming period is not quite as long as the Oncidium Intergenerics species.

The absolute beauty of the flowers does tend to help balance things a bit. Taking care of orchids belonging to the Cattleya group is also relatively easy compared to this next lot.

While many say that the Phragmegediums are an ideal orchid plant for a beginner to learn the art of taking care of orchids. The phragmegediums are more complicated than the last two species. They are more delicate and prone to environmental disasters.

The light requirements are very bright, in fact brighter than most other orchids. Any excess watering can cause the root to rot away. Over fertilization will cause the leaves of the plant to turn brown. The plant needs to be monitored a lot more closely than the previous ones.

Taking care of orchids in the phalaenopsis and the paphiopedilum specie is a better bet. They need far less attention and will generally do well under most window sill conditions.
