That is a taller than a full grown man, a very tall stem indeed. When you look at this orchid it looks like matured sugar cane, and it is often referred to as the “sugarcane” orchid.
Rare orchids can be found everywhere in the world. Even in your own backyard. One can never tell. For instance, the rare “ghost” orchid. This rarity only grows in the state of Florida, at least as far as scientist know.
There is not really much known about it. It has gorgeous flowers that are an innocent looking white color. The flowers tend to be six inches or more in length. When it comes to rare orchids, this one takes the cake.
You see, it has been referred to as the “ghost” orchid because the plants are not there, but the flowers are. This particular orchid has become such an enigma, that even a book was written about it.
“Cattleyas” are orchids which are best grown in a well drained pot, or hanging basket. These rare orchids are beautiful, but if you over water them you can kill them. For the most part they need a seasonal spot to live indoors if it gets too cool outdoors. Cattleyas are known as epiphytes, which mean they attach themselves to tree limbs, and trunks.
It is natural for these rare orchids to be dry between watering because of their root system. Did I say root system? Cattleyas don’t have roots. They have pseudobulbs, which store water naturally. These commonly grown (due to breeding) orchids are known as the “corsage” flower. Though they are commonly grown, these are extremely rare out in the wild.
Last but not least, let’s talk about one more rather rare orchid. This one is called the Red Orchid, also known as the “Red Moon Orchid”. The Phalaenopsis corningiana, is the scientific name.
The colloquial name comes from the deep red stripes on the petals of this rare beauty. Sometimes there is even some yellow combined with the red. These rare orchids have flower spikes that can reach twelve and a half inches in height. That’s just the flowers alone.
The plants themselves can range from tiny to more than a meter tall. Part of what makes this one of the rare orchids is that not only is it extremely difficult to locate out in the wild, it is also very difficult for scientist to breed. I guess you could say that the Red Orchid is the rarest of the orchids.
