is that if you use bark or an orchid mix, you don’t have to repot your Miltonia Orchid except for about once every two years or so. Definitely a plus in my book!

Watering

Miltonia Orchids grow all year long. Therefore you must not let them dry out. It is true that some orchids need to be allowed to dry out but this rule doesn’t go for these ones. You give the Miltonia Orchid a real good watering in the early morning. Then in the evening they’ll dry out somewhat, but still be moist.

During the summer months and in any hot weather climate, you would want to water them at least two times per week. In the winters and colder weather climates you should water the Miltonia Orchid once time per week.

Feeding

Feeding these orchids is quite simple. Miltonia Orchids need a fertilizer which has nitrogen content. This is to be used once a month. Should you be using a liquid fertilizer, the amount is a teaspoon per gallon of water. It may not seem like much, but it’s quite concentrated so stick to the prescription.

Light

The Miltonia Orchid can not handle full sun. Though there are some species of orchids that can, this is not one of them. Bright, shade or a plant light for about two hours everyday suits the Miltonia Orchid. They can handle a little sun but be careful because too much strong sun can cause your orchid to burn.

Temperature

When it comes to the Miltonia Orchid, it’s one of these species that can handle occasional extreme temperature changes. That is as long as they don’t last for a long time. Generally a day temp of about no more than 80 degrees F, and night temps of no less than 60 degrees F is good for these orchids.

A little lesson

Miltonia Orchid was named after the English patron of horticulture, Viscount Milton. There are two species of Miltonia species, which are very similar. One is the cooler climate orchid found in the Andes Mountains. This species has large flowers. Meanwhile the other species is of the warmer temperatures of Brazil, and has small flowers. There are about ten actual species of Miltonia in Central and Southern Brazil.

The Miltonia Orchid is sometimes confused with the Miltoniopsis Orchid. Miltoniopsis are not nearly as easy to grow as the Miltonia Orchid. So please, when you purchase a Miltonia Orchid, make sure the garden associate hands you a Miltonia Orchid so you can enjoy this gorgeous flower as well.
